The location, ambiance and history of this hotel is excellent for a first-time visit to San Francisco.

            9.6

Nice room, comfy beds, friendly staff. Perfect location, a block from the trolley to anywhere.

Like I read before booking the punning was loud, but not a huge deal. My only complaint was that I waited two hours (3 requests) for a corkscrew.

          • Family with children
            9.6

It is veru well located. The rooms are very confortable. Excellent view of the city.

Parking is expensive, but there is more convinient rates near the hotel.

          • Older travelers
            7.4

Comfort of the room and helpful staff. courtesy car use to take you to a prescribed area. There was, however, no return pick-up. Complementary coffee early in the morning.

There was no real coffee shop or dining room. There was a breakfast buffet but it was expensive and there was no a la carte menu. The location was not convenient to restaurants and shops. I would recommend this hotel with reservations for the reasons stated above.

          • Older travelers
            10.0

Old style that is upodated very nicely.

The top of the mark was too expensive. only used it once.

Loved the staff at the front desk and at the front door. They were all really friendly and provided excellent service.

We did not like the availability of the concierge. There were multiple times we called and the line went to the messaging service. When we did get an answer the gentleman was short with us.

The service and concierge was wonderful. The rooms were cozy, but they were just regular hotel rooms, hardly worth the price. The hotel is getting by on reputation, not on wonderful food, rooms, drinks, entertainment, etc. The most disappointing thing to me was that there wasn't a spa. The hotel had to call someone from the outside to give me a massage...which was only mediocre. As great as the service was, we'll probably choose to stay somewhere else next time.

The room was very clean with a nice city view and the bed was extremely comfortable.

The food at the signature "Top of the Mark" was not very good. Great view but below average food for a premium price.

The hotel is in a great location. Away from but close to all that San Francisco has to offer. The staff were friendly and helpful.

The hotel shows a little wear in some areas. The bathroom in our room had some minor mold spots.

Location and its breakfast with a great view

The size of the bathroom, only one person can fit with difficulty because of the door and the size of it.

The location is very nice. It's on top of the hill with nice top level view of the city and bay. It's also few blocks distance to union square where all the shops there. However, it's makes it difficult to get back to the hotel walking the hill up but getting a taxi or other transportation is only 5-6 dollars. The food is good bite pensive I found.

The one thing I was frustrated off is that there is no free wifi available even in the lobby. You have to buy the Internet which is ok if it works well. The Internet connection was bad in the room I was in. Never worked. It worked only in the lobby. !! Plus they charge you different Internet connection for different devices u are using even if you are in the same room ( E.g laptop and iPhone ). Bottom line bad internet service. They can afford better.

We just loved this hotle. We were able to walk down to the shops and all over the city. The staff was super nice and helped out in anyway the could. I would have to say it was the bestest stay I have ever had in San Francisco. We will stay here again. Oh one more thing they had up graded our room because we were there for a Honeymoon and they had left a nice card and bottle of champagne for us too. Great service!

            None... The hotel rocked!!!

See below. An honest appraisal from a decades long customer.

The mark is simply worn out. We have been guests for many years. We even stayed in the penthouse for the Year 2000 millennium. Sad to say things have changed quite a bit. The room infrastructure maintenance is substandard. By way of example the room had been repainted without first covering up the old chips and holes. The result is a room with trim features that look nothing but second rate. We went up to the Top Of The Mark on a Friday night for drinks and the place was dingy ( run down). It was also half empty. In years gone by you were lucky even to get in the place. A wake up call for corporate management.. Folk are going elsewhere for ambiance. We went there for breakfast one morning and were told that all that was available was a $35 breakfast buffet. Not acceptable. This lovely, old landmark needs a total refurbishment and realignment of its services. We'll go elsewhere next time we're in S.F.

The Bed materials, pillows, blankets were very comfortable. Yet, the mattress were too soft.

This Hotel doesn't have a main dinning room. The bar was too small to fit for the guests who are staying and having dinner in the hotel. The bar keeps long waiting line of people in very small entrance. I think this hotel should have bigger dining restaurants. But the morning meal which included the charge were tasty and nice service.

The location turned out to be perfect for the things I wanted to get to in SF, and for the things that were further away, the cabs were plentiful and quick. If you're planning to walk and see the sights, you'll need some other transport to get there in the first place.

I had a room where the water pressure in the shower was nearly nonexistent. A mere trickle, it seemed. Probably a "Bay Area conservation" plan activity, that also magically reduces the hotel's expenses but doesn't cause the rates to drop.
